Q&A with Kaci Morgan https://old.kristinjdawson.com/qa-with-kaci-morgan/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=qa-with-kaci-morgan Thu, 02 Apr 2020 18:18:32 +0000 http://old.kristinjdawson.com/?p=47580 The Lilac Plague, The Viking Maiden, and Queen Immortal are coming together for an awesome spring paperback book bundle!

I’m so excited these two authors are joining me for an instagram giveaway (starting May 7th!). Both of them are getting rave reviews on their high fantasy novels with intrigue, high stakes, and sweet romance. Queen Immortal is coming out with the next installment in late summer and The Viking Maiden series just completed — so it’s an exciting time to get on board with all of these fantasy novels!

To celebrate, Kaci Morgan kindly answered my Q&A questions!

Question #1: If you could go into any fantasy world, which one would you pick?

I LOVE Juliet Marillier’s historical fantasy world in the Sevenwater Series. It is mostly similar to our world, unless you happen to find yourself crossing over to the other world of the Fae, where magical creatures, good and bad, exist to either help or harm. It is so fascinating and I daresay I’m a bit of a fanatic for the world she has created.

Question #2: What is the most surprising feedback you’re getting about your novel?

I was surprised to find out that young kids (as young as 8 years old) have loved the book. So much so that one darling young 9-year-old girl dressed up as Beza for Halloween.  At first, I marketed my book as an adult fantasy, then quickly changed to young adult after finding out how young people are enjoying it as well. Lastly, I have had readers tell me that they don’t normally like fantasy, but have thoroughly enjoyed my book. So even if fantasy is not your genre, I think you will find the mystery and romance of the novel gripping enough to keep you turning pages.

Question #3: What was your inspiration for the novel?

My inspiration came when I realized how much I love to read about strong female protagonists. I decided to make the strongest one I could think of, who seemed perfect on the outside, but was not so on the inside. I also plucked a few characters from my first novel (which is unpublished and will remain so forever) who I knew could not be shelved. Vohar, a possible love interest for Beza, Samia, a witch who seems a bit crazy to those around her but ultimately ends up playing a vital (albeit slim) role in the novel, and Blentif, the prince whom you’ll love to hate.

Question #4: How many books are in the series and when are they scheduled to come out?

For now, I have three books total set for the series. Book two will be released in August 2019, and book three in the Spring of 2020.  More books are simmering, depending on reader interest. Beza’s story might be put to rest in book three, but there are many people in her life that could carry the story of on.

Question #5: Why did you feel it was important to have this book out into the world?

As with most books, there is a moral to the story, one that I feel is pertinent to all of us.  Beza is a three-hundred-fifteen-year-old queen, who is also immortal, and by all means holds greater power, and beauty, than anyone else in the book (or in our world as we know it). However, she is flawed and imperfect and has lessons to learn, just like all of us. She experiences things that make her doubt herself and her ability, just like all of us. And more than anything, she wants to feel loved by those around her, just like all of us. Bottom line, Queen Beza is a very relatable character whom readers grow to love and root for, and in rooting for her, we also root for ourselves and our capacity as flawed individuals to overcome even the greatest obstacles.

Book Birthday Giveaway https://old.kristinjdawson.com/rose-court-birthday/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rose-court-birthday Fri, 01 Nov 2019 08:09:58 +0000 http://old.kristinjdawson.com/?p=47701 Happy Book Birthday to The Rose Court! The sequel to The Lilac Plague is hitting the shelves Nov 14th!! Celebrate with me by entering to win this giveaway worth $30! ???

Nicoleta is a kind, observant person, and like in life, sometimes it’s hard to take control of your destiny when there are so many loud voices in your head. By the end of the novel, Nicoleta’s anthem becomes “I am enough”. And she is. And so are you! Hence the dedication of the novel, and the statement necklace I selected for this giveaway

The Rose Court Giveaway
  • “The Rose Court” (e-book)*
  • Buffalo Girls Salvage “I Am Enough” necklace
  • Signed Map (not pictured)
  • Chocolate (not pictured, but I have to add some because… chocolate!)

a Rafflecopter giveaway

* The iPad is not included in this giveaway.

Inside Peek at the Process:
This novel was challenging because of the nuanced political intrigue and suspense elements, which was much more technical than I’d imagined. haha! In addition, this novel balances a large cast of characters with big personalities. I love these characters, and I hope you do, too! (Or love to hate them 😉 ) This book was written a year ago, but I took my time, thoughtfully revamping and developing the story into what you’ll be receiving. My awesome team of editors and beta readers helped get this into shape. It’s a jam-packed epic novel, perfect for high fantasy readers who like nuanced characters, a meaty-plot, mystery, and a bit of romance, too!

Giveaway Details:
The winner will be announced on Nov 11th. Will ship to physical addresses in the USA, only (not open to international entries). Facebook nor any other social media entity is involved with this giveaway. Click {here} for more information on my terms of service.

July Giveaway https://old.kristinjdawson.com/july-giveaway/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=july-giveaway Thu, 11 Jul 2019 04:37:09 +0000 http://old.kristinjdawson.com/?p=47639 Frigid: Frost Boarding House 1, The Lilac Plague, and The Lord of Dreams, are coming together for my last book bundle giveaway of this summer!

Find out more about the USA Today author Frigid, Joanna Reeder, with this fun Q&A:

#1: What fantastical creature would you rather have for a pet: miniature dragon, brownie, or a pegasus?

Joanna: My first answer was a dragon, because dragon!! But when I thought about it, I’d like a brownie to help around the house and give me more time for writing! 😀

CJ: A pegasus! Although the miniature dragon is a very close second. Honestly, the dragon would probably be more convenient than a full-size pegasus. Hm. Perhaps I should rethink this.

#2: What is the inspiration behind your novel?

Joanna: It’s a part of a larger universe so the world was already built, but I’ve always loved books that are set way in the past and have fun connections to the books set in the present. Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments/Infernal Devices come to mind. And you really don’t see many shifter books set in the Victorian era, so it was a breath of fresh air and so much fun to write!!

CJ: The Lord of Dreams actually began with a fascination with the Labyrinth movie with David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. I wrote a blog post on what a great character Jareth is. I wanted to write an homage to the weird, upside-down logic of the movie and the magic of Jareth and his goblin kingdom. I wanted to write a romance between a powerful Fae king and an immature, human girl that made sense on a character level. And, as in most of my books, I wanted to write about heroism, about sacrifice, and about selflessness. So Tuathal is the villainous Fae king… but nothing is as it seems. Claire is a bit selfish and spoiled… but she can’t remain so, because too much depends on the courage she doesn’t know she has.

#3: Tell us about the magical system in your book?

Joanna: All kinds of shifters. Dragons, phoenix, weres (wolves, bears, cats) etc. We have over 10 kinds of shifters. Each type of shifter has a different set of magical powers and abilities. For instance, dragons and phoenix can conjure fire, but dragons can also affect the emotions of those around them. Ursa (weres who are bears) are extremely strong, but can also be very volitile and quick to anger. Harpies manipulate light. Wolves have an intense sense of smell. Alicorns create ice and can heal with their horns.

CJ: It’s Faerie… things make sense, but the logic isn’t the same as that of the human world. Intention and determination are just as important as strength. Magic is a bit capricious, and nothing is as it first appears.

#4: Which is your favorite: Star Wars or Marvel?

Joanna: Ooh… that’s a hard one. I’m gonna go with Star Wars. I recently read a fantastic Star Wars novel by Claudia Gray that took place in the Star Wars world (not my genre and the only Star Wars novel I’ve ever read) and it was fantastic. Also, Star Wars is just classic!! (But I also like Marvel)

CJ: Marvel. Because Captain America. That’s why.

June Instagram Giveaway https://old.kristinjdawson.com/june-instagram-giveaway/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=june-instagram-giveaway Sun, 09 Jun 2019 07:41:16 +0000 http://old.kristinjdawson.com/?p=47581 Blood Rose Rebellion, Followed by Frost, and Shattered Snow are coming together with The Lilac Plague for a huge thrones+crowns summer reading giveaway!

Find out more about the authors behind these buzz-worthy, page-turning high fantasy novels with this fun Q&A!

Question #1: If you could go into any fantasy world, which one would you pick?

Charlie: Oooh that’s a tough one, because sometimes the magic is amazing but the world itself sucks, or the world is amazing but the magic isn’t as snazzy. Magic-wise, Mistborn or Stormlight Archive. World wise… maybe Howl’s Moving Castle?

Rachel: I have always wanted to live in Hobbiton. I would love to be a curly haired gardener in the Shire.

Rosalyn: Most of the fantasy worlds I love would probably be dangerous to actually visit. Besides the obvious (yes, I want to go to Hogwarts), I’d love to visit the alternative Regency-era London of Sorcery and Cecilia.

Question #2: What is the most surprising feedback you’re getting about your novel?

Charlie: Honestly, the funniest thing about this book is that it’s my highest rated novel, but also my least-selling one! It’s a quieter book than my Paper Magician series, but I’m always immensely surprised and pleased when I have someone tell me it’s one of their favorite novels. I even wrote it before any of my other published works, so that really means something!

Rachel: I based Shattered Snow off the real-life history of Margaretha Von Waldeck, a countess believed to be the inspiration for Snow White. A German scholar named Eckard Sanders discovered her story and I devoured his articles. After Shattered Snow’s publication, he heard about my book and reached out to me via an American colleague. It was amazing!

Rosalyn: The most surprising feedback on BLOOD ROSE REBELLION? That the book got an A- grade in Entertainment Weekly: “In this richly imagined 19th-Century historical fantasy–which teems with mystical Hungarian creatures–a young woman, banished from British high society, for her inability to cast spells, gets caught up in the Magyar uprising.” (I’m a longtime subscriber to their magazine and it was a total thrill to see my book listed in their book reviews).

Question #3: What was your inspiration for the novel?

Charlie: Oddly enough, it was scraping the frost off my windshield. I went down to do it and came back into my apartment to warm up my hands. I thought, wouldn’t it suck to feel like this all the time? And that’s where the novel began. It was just an idea in the back of my head until one day at work, while doing stair laps, the prologue just came to me. I got really excited for the book after that.

Rachel: I was listening to a time travel novel while cleaning a mirror and the thought struck me: What if the magic mirror in Snow White was a time traveler? Thirty days later, I had a finished manuscript. Four months later, I had a publishing contract!

Rosalyn: Blood Rose Rebellion started as a kind of reverse Chosen One story, with me asking: what would it be like to be born into a world where everyone has magic except for you? And so at the beginning of the story, the MC is a kind of outcast because while the rest of the nobility can cast spells, she only ever manages to break them.

Question #4: Why did you feel it was important to have this book out into the world?

Charlie: Followed by Frost was my first foray into young adult fiction. I feel like this novel is where I started to actually get the hang of my craft. Everything before it had been Sanderson-wannabe epic fantasy. In this book I found my voice.

Rachel: Because time travel + fairy tales = awesome! But genuinely, time travel and fairy tales seem to fit together so perfectly. I couldn’t NOT write it.

Rosalyn: I don’t know that I felt BLOOD ROSE REBELLION was important so much as it was a story I wanted to write–the kind of story I would have loved to read as a teen. It was important to me, however, that the main character be an ordinary teen girl of the Victorian era–so while she could ride horses and dance, she wasn’t trained to fight. She had to use ordinary abilities to do extraordinary things. (Okay, so she does have magic, but even that was something she had to acquire over time).
